For most daytime city parking, lock the frame (and a wheel if you can) to something fixed, take a removable battery inside when you can, and accept that no bike lock is theft-proof. E-bikes attract thieves because of the motor, the battery and resale value. Budget for the lock as you budget for brakes.
Bike lock types: D-lock, chain or folding lock
The bike lock you can carry every day beats a heavier one that stays at home. These bike locks are the usual types.
U-locks (D-locks). High security for their weight when the size fits. Awkward on thick racks. Choose a size that leaves little space inside the shackle.
Folding locks. Easier to carry. Security varies a lot between models, so check the maker’s security level.
Chains. Flexible around awkward street furniture, and heavy when thick enough to resist cutting. Use a cover to protect the paint.
Cable locks. A second lock for wheels or the saddle. Use a stronger lock for the frame in a city.

E-bike lock: frame, battery and display
An e-bike lock still starts with the frame. The battery and the display are separate, because both come off on many commute bikes.
- Frame first. Lock through the frame to a fixed object. A lock through the wheel alone leaves the rest of the bike.
- Battery. If it comes out, take it with you on longer stops. It is valuable on its own.
- Display. If it comes off, take it with you.
- Quick-release wheels and saddles. A second cable or fixed skewers stop thieves taking parts.
- Protect the bike. A U-lock that is too short can scratch paint or crush cables.
Where you park matters
A mid-range lock in a busy, visible spot can protect better than a heavy lock on a deserted railing. Look for:
- staffed bike rooms
- stands that can’t be lifted
- light and people passing
- a different spot from night to night
Insurance and registration
Policies differ by country and insurer. Some require approved bike locks, photos or a police report. Read your policy. A bike register, where one exists, can help you get the bike back. It doesn’t replace a bike lock.

Should I use two locks?
A frame lock plus a lighter second lock for a wheel is common for long daytime stops. Two heavy locks you never carry don’t help.
Are lock security ratings useful in the EU?
They help you compare locks within the same rating scheme. They can’t promise how a lock holds up on your street.
Can I lock through the motor wheel only?
Usually a poor choice. The rest of the bike can be taken.
