Commuting in rain and winter on an e-bike or e-scooter

Affiliate links on ecommute may earn us a commission if you buy. Same price either way — disclosure. This is not a wet-weather test. We do not assign IP ratings, fenders, tyre models, or lights to a ride unless that figure is in our catalog. It is not.

Quick answer

Rain and cold change the ride more than the brochure does. Plan for being seen, for longer stopping distances, and for a battery that delivers less when it is cold. Our catalog does not state IP ratings, fenders, tyre models, or lights, so this page does not name a ride that “has” them. Where the merchant states whether the battery comes out, that is the cold-weather fact we can show.

What an IP rating is — and what we will not invent

An IP code is a lab label: one digit for dust, one for water, from a defined test. A higher water digit is not a promise that a commute in heavy rain is fine, and it says nothing about salt, connectors, or a charger left in a puddle. No ride in our catalog has an IP rating stored. Check the live product page if you need one. Do not treat a blog guess as the spec.

Lights, tyres, fenders, brakes

These are the practical points. They are general. They are not a spec sheet for a named model.

If a product page states lights or fenders, believe that page, not this one.

Cold weather and the battery

Cold chemistry delivers less, and winter clothing plus a backpack adds load. Treat the claimed range as a ceiling. Compare shows Est. real-world range as 60–70% of the claim. A cold day can land lower. Method: E-bike real-world range.

Charge and store the pack indoors when you can. Do not leave it empty for weeks, and do not bake it on a heater. Follow the maker’s manual.

Where the merchant states the battery comes out, you can carry the pack inside and leave a lighter frame downstairs.

ENGWE P275 SE — battery comes out

The catalog says the battery is removable, claimed range 100 km, weight 24 kg, listed price €999. Est. real-world range on our rule is 60–70 km. That is not a winter measurement.

Where the merchant states the battery stays in, you charge the bike where the cable reaches. You cannot carry the pack upstairs on its own.

ENGWE T14 — battery stays in

The catalog says the battery is not removable, claimed range 55 km, weight 22.7 kg, listed price €599. Est. real-world range on our rule is 33–39 km. That is not a winter measurement. It is also one of the e-bikes listed under €1000: E-bikes under €1000.

Check price

If the catalog says the battery is Not confirmed, we do not guess. Several rides are in that state. Open Compare and read the battery line.

Scooters in the catalog are mostly stated as not removable (the KuKirin cards) or not confirmed (some Pure cards). SE-legal e-scooters is the list that states both Swedish caps. It does not add a rain rating.

FAQ

Do you list IP ratings for these rides?

No. The catalog does not include IP ratings, fenders, tyre models, or lights. This page does not assign them. Check the product page.

How should I treat range in winter?

Use the claimed range as a ceiling. Compare shows Est. real-world range as 60–70% of that claim, rounded to the nearest kilometre. It is a planning span, not a measurement. Cold can land lower. See the range guide.

What if the battery does not come out?

If the merchant says it stays in, you charge the bike where it is parked. ENGWE T14 is stated that way. If the merchant says it comes out, you can carry the pack indoors. ENGWE P275 SE is stated that way. If it is not confirmed, the catalog says Not confirmed and this page does not guess.
